Comparing real drinking water filters to tabletop water filters is lame

Comparison tests of water filters are an important decision-making tool for consumers who are dissatisfied with their tap water. Well-known German magazines such as Geo, Focus, Stern publish advertorials with such tests under their names every year. But on closer inspection of these (purchased) articles, one notices that the tested water filters are for the most part so-called pitcher or table water filters. And here the term “filter” is actually misleading. Because table water filters are not suitable for specifically removing pathogens/germs and pollutants such as pesticides, drug residues, hormone-like substances or heavy metals from the water.

Öko-Test: “Table water filters with activated carbon filters are superfluous”.

On the contrary, as recently as May 2022, the magazine Ökotest published an article in which consumer protectors declare table water filters with activated carbon filters to be “superfluous to harmful” (Link: https://www.oekotest.de/essen-trinken/Wasser-filtern-Wie-sinnvoll-sind-Wasserfilter-wie-Brita-Co-_600943_1.html)

“From a hygienic point of view, water filters and water treaters are not advisable. Drinking water is a perishable foodstuff that quickly becomes germy if it is left in the container for too long or comes into contact with old filters,” the consumer center warns. Often, the water is contaminated with more germs after filtering than before. In addition, filters for domestic use filter out valuable minerals such as calcium and magnesium.”

The purpose of a table water filter is primarily to improve the taste of tap water. for example, to improve the quality of tea or coffee. Table water filters are filled with loose activated carbon granules and, depending on the model, also contain ion exchangers made of plastic resin. This allows them to reduce chlorine as well as other taste and odor impairments and, through ion exchange, remove some of the lime from tap water, i.e. they make the water softer. But filtration in the sense of almost complete removal of impurities such as pesticides, germs, bacteria, heavy metals, hormones or drug residues does not take place at all.

In addition, the absorption capacity of the activated carbon granulate of a cartridge is relatively limited and exhausted after about 100-150 liters. If the filter cartridge is not changed in time (after approx. 4-6 weeks), the previously bound pollutants can be dissolved again and released in concentrated form into the water. One speaks then of bleeding or breakthrough of the filter. The frequent need to change the filter results in relatively high consumption costs and also large amounts of plastic waste.

Better drinking water with Seccua water filters

If you want to effectively treat your tap water, use a Seccua filter, which is installed at the inlet from the public drinking water network into the house. Seccua water filters not only provide a better smell and taste, but also healthier water. In addition to filtering solids such as sand, suspended solids, rust particles and microplastics, the ultrafiltration membrane removes 99.99999% of all bacteria and parasites and up to 99.99% of all viruses. The Seccua Biofilter also significantly reduces dissolved contaminants such as antibiotic, hormone and other drug residues, plasticizers, disinfection by-products, pesticides and other dissolved organic components.

In contrast, Seccua water filters leave minerals such as calcium or magnesium completely in the water, which are crucial for a natural water taste. The natural balance of the water is preserved. For safe and tasty drinking water everywhere in the home.
